The meeting room at Ballinderry Sports Complex was a full house last Saturday morning to mark the presentation of new half zip tops, sponsored by Austeire in Australia, were presented to the Naomh Eoin Under 12 and Under 16 hurlers and respective officials. 

 

Austeire is a plant hire company in Sydney, Australia and is owned by former Tipperary man Mark Haugh. Mark was born in Kyle Park a townland situated on the Borrisokane to Ballinderry road. 

 

Thanks to modern technology the club linked up with Mark and his family at his residence in Sydney for a live conversation. It was 7pm in Sydney, nine hours ahead of Ballinderry time. Thomas Hogan, a friend of Marks and who started the ball rolling organised the design of the tops with George Hannigan was master of ceremonies and he called on Mark to address the attendance. Mark said it was an honour to be asked to sponsor the tops and he wished Naomh Eoin the best of luck in the championships. 

 

Mark’s brothers Conor, John, Morgan and Tommy werepresent and Conor presented the tops to members of the Under 12 and 16 squads and officials. Also the attendance, were Rovers club Presidents Frank Moran and Tony Fox. Tea and refreshments were available thanks to Paddy’s Bar, Terryglass. 

 

Club officials from both Borrisokane and Shannon Rovers were also there on Saturday including Rovers club chairperson Paul Tiernan, Juvenile chairperson Eddie Quinn along with Borrisokane Juvenile chairperson, Adrian Eganand Secretary Conor Darcy. Each official thanked Mark for his generosity.

 

Earlier on Thursday evening, Conor had presented tops to the under 14 and  Minor teams at Gardiner Park, Borrisokane in the company of club officials led by Borrisokane club secretary Collette Morris, Treasurer Mike O’Brien and Juvenile Chairperson Adrian Egan alongside Conor’s brothers John, and Tommy and his sister Eileen Molloy.

 

A special thanks to Deidre Quinlan who made sure the line and the link to Sydney was in working order. 

 

Mark Haugh played juvenile hurling with Shannon Rovers 1978 to 1985. He played in seven North finals winning four. He won two North Under-14 B titles in 1979 and 1981 and in 1983 he added a North Under-16 medal as rovers defeated Burgess in the final. At fifteen years of age he played full back with Rovers as they won their first North Minor B Hurling final with victory Burgess in 1984. He switched to Borrisokane in 1986 and three years later he lined out at midfield with Erin’s Hope as they defeated Toomevara in the North Under -21 A hurling decider. In 1987 Mark was a substitute with Tipperary minor hurlers in the first round win over Limerick and he later progressed to play senior hurling with Borrisokane

Last Saturday marked 100 years to the exact day when Radio 2RN broadcast its first ever live game of a field sport on the airwaves. It was in fact the first ever in Europe. Galway played Kilkenny in the All-Ireland senior hurling semi final that day in Croke Park and Paddy Mehigan, a journalist, better known as Carbery, and he was the voice that brought the thrills and spills to all listeners all over Ireland that day and for many more days. 

 

Congratulations to Naomh Eoin Minor Hurlers who defeated Moneygall in the North Tipperary Minor B Hurling final at Nenagh last Sunday, throw in 2pm. Final score Naomh Eoin to 1-19 Moneygall 1-14. 

 

Monday 31: Naomh Eoin v Portroe in the North Under-16 Shield semi final at Portroe.

 

Naomh Eoin Under 14 hurlers will play Newport in the North Under 14 A quarter final in Dolla on Monday the 10th of September.

 

Another under 10 hurling blitz will take place in Semple Stadium and Dr Morris Park this coming Saturday. 

 

To Lorrha in winning the North Minor C Hurling final when defeating Newport in the final at Puckaun last Saturday evening. 

Congrats to Borrisokane Junior Footballers as they progress to the quarter finals of the County Premier Junior Football championship. They defeated Loughmore Castleiney in their final round robin game last Friday evening.  

 

The Gaelic Games Associations are inviting young members aged 12 to 21 to attend the GAA Regional Youth Forums taking place in September. The forums will give young people the opportunity to have their say on the future of Gaelic games through discussion, debate and interactive workshops. This year, the Youth Forum is coming to regional venues with The Dome, FBD Semple Stadium, Thurles, hosting a forum on Sunday September 6th from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm. The forums have been developed by the National GAA Youth Committee and will help shape the future direction of the Association. Young people are encouraged to attend and have their voices heard.
